Introduction

Welcome to Chapter 2 of Module 2, where we dive deep into the critical aspects of physics simulation and sensor modeling for humanoid robotics. This chapter focuses on configuring physics parameters for realistic simulation and implementing sensor simulation systems for humanoid robotics in virtual environments.

In the previous chapter, we established the foundational Gazebo simulation environment, learning to install and configure Gazebo, create custom environments, and integrate robots. Now, we'll expand upon that foundation by implementing realistic physics behaviors and sophisticated sensor systems that will be essential for robot perception and navigation.

Why Physics & Sensors Matter

Physics simulation and sensor modeling form the backbone of any realistic robotic simulation environment. Without accurate physics, robots would behave unnaturally, making it impossible to test real-world scenarios. Similarly, without proper sensor simulation, robots would have no way to perceive and interact with their environment.

The physics simulation encompasses fundamental parameters such as:

  • Gravity: Proper gravitational forces that affect robot movement and stability
  • Friction: Realistic surface interactions that impact robot locomotion
  • Collision Detection: Accurate detection of physical interactions between objects
  • Material Properties: Surface characteristics that affect robot-object interactions

Sensor simulation enables robots to perceive their environment through:

  • LiDAR Sensors: Providing 360-degree environmental mapping through laser ranging
  • Depth Cameras: Generating 3D spatial information from visual data
  • IMU Sensors: Tracking orientation, acceleration, and angular velocity

We'll explore different physics engines (ODE, Bullet, DART) and their application to humanoid robotics, ensuring your simulations behave predictably and realistically.

Lesson 2.2 – LiDAR Simulation in Virtual Environments

Building upon the physics foundation, we'll model and simulate LiDAR sensors for environment perception. You'll learn to generate point cloud data with appropriate noise modeling, configure range detection parameters for realistic LiDAR simulation, and process LiDAR simulation data using ROS 2 communication patterns.

Lesson 2.3 – Depth Camera and IMU Simulation

Finally, we'll complete the sensor suite by implementing depth cameras and IMU sensors in simulation. You'll learn to implement depth cameras in Gazebo simulation environment, simulate IMU sensors for orientation sensing capabilities, and integrate depth camera and IMU data for sensor fusion.
